Counselling guide

What to do from documents to final reporting. Always double-check dates on the official websites for your year.

  1. Step 1

    Understand the two counselling tracks

MCC (central) and your state portal run in parallel. You usually register for both.

    • MCC covers 15% AIQ in government colleges plus AIIMS, JIPMER, ESIC, AFMC, deemed and central universities.
    • Your state authority covers 85% state quota and most private/management seats in that state.
    • If allotted in both, you must choose one and vacate the other within the reporting window.

Start at mcc.nic.in and your state counselling website.

  2. Step 2

    Prepare documents before registration

Missing papers can block reporting even after allotment.

    • NEET admit card and scorecard / rank letter
    • Class 10 & 12 mark sheets and certificates
    • Photo ID (Aadhaar / passport / voter ID)
    • Category certificate (EWS / OBC-NCL / SC / ST) if applicable β€” check validity dates
    • PwBD certificate if applicable
    • State domicile / nativity certificate for state quota
    • Passport photos as specified by the portal

Follow the exact document list in the current year's MCC / state bulletin.

  3. Step 3

Register on MCC and pay fees

Registration + security deposit are required to participate in AIQ rounds.

    • Create / log in on the MCC UG counselling portal.
    • Enter NEET details carefully β€” mismatches cause rejection.
    • Pay non-refundable registration fee and refundable security deposit as applicable.
    • Keep payment receipts and login credentials safe.

Only use mcc.nic.in β€” ignore unofficial lookalike sites.

  4. Step 4

    Register on your home-state portal

State rules (domicile, categories, fees) differ β€” read that state's brochure.

    • Find the official state counselling URL for the current year (URLs change).
    • Complete domicile / category verification steps required by that state.
    • Pay state registration / security amounts separately from MCC.

Always use the official state counselling website for your year.

  5. Step 5

    Study the seat matrix

Know which seats exist for your category and quota before filling choices.

    • Download the round's seat matrix from MCC / state.
    • Note new colleges and seat increases β€” they can move cutoffs vs last year.
    • Filter by course (MBBS/BDS/etc.) and your eligible quotas.

Seat matrix is published on the official portal each round.

  6. Step 6

    Fill and lock choices carefully

Allotment follows your preference order + AIR + category + available seats.

    • Order colleges by true preference β€” never by 'probability only'.
    • Include stretch, realistic, and safe options.
    • You can usually fill many choices; use that.
    • Lock before the deadline. Unlocked choices may auto-lock as last saved β€” confirm portal rules.

Choice filling happens only on the official MCC / state portals.

  7. Step 7

    Round 1 allotment and reporting

Round 1 is often the safest exit window if you do not want the seat.

    • Check provisional then final allotment result.
    • Download allotment letter only after final result when instructed.
    • Physically report with originals if you accept the seat.
    • Understand free-exit / refund rules for Round 1 in the current bulletin.

Read MCC FAQs on exit and security deposit for the current year.

  8. Step 8

Round 2 / 3 upgrades and forfeiture risk

Later rounds can upgrade you, but exit rules tighten.

    • If upgraded, lower preference seats are usually cancelled automatically.
    • Exiting after certain rounds may forfeit security deposit.
    • Mop-up / Round 3 and stray vacancy have stricter joining rules.

Never rely on third-party summaries alone β€” check the bulletin round rules.

  9. Step 9

    Stray vacancy round

Final leftover seats; joining is typically compulsory if allotted.

    • Eligibility lists are published separately.
    • Non-joining can mean deposit loss and further penalties as per rules.

Follow MCC stray vacancy notices only.
